Envoy Hussain met with several British officials and a variety of community members on his UK trip, and found the face-to-face meeting with Totteridge Mosque community members of real benefit due to the wide range of participants and issues raised. He noted he would take their views back to Washington. Islamix was previously involved with meeting officials under President Bush's administration. Envoy Hussain’s events in High Wycombe built on those earlier discussions and highlighted the currents views of the community.
Some of the issues raised at the meeting included:
- Airport stops by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) particularly with regard to Muslim passengers, some of whom had been detained at airports;
- US Foreign policy and military involvement in Muslim countries;
- The ongoing situation involving Palestine and Israel;
- Increasing confidence for Muslim travellers to the USA;
- Impact of the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq on Muslim communities in Europe;
The engagement also provided an opportunity for Envoy Hussain to dispel some misconceptions about President Obama’s engagement with the Muslim world by citing clear examples of activities and initiatives already underway. He also corrected misinformation voiced during the dialogue, particularly regarding the supply of weapons to extremists, as he recounted historical events of U.S. military involvement in the Middle East. In each instance, Envoy Hussain underscored the current Administration’s willingness to dialogue with the Muslim world and put positive measures in place to further the relationship.
Also present was was Sue Hynard from the office of Steve Baker, member of parliament for High Wycombe.
After the Mosque meeting Envoy Hussain and Islamix members met with the Mayor of High Wycombe, Councillor Chaudhary Allah Ditta.
Islamix will continue to collate feedback from the community and send to the Envoy’s office.
Envoy Hussain was later hosted in the House of Lords for two additional sessions with a wide cross-section of the British Muslim community.
